Xerri's Grotto, nestled beneath a private residence in Xagħra, Gozo, offers a fascinating glimpse into the island's geological history. In 1923, Anthony Xerri unearthed this subterranean wonder while digging a well. Instead of water, he found a cave adorned with stunning stalactites and stalagmites.Descend the narrow, 10-meter spiral staircase into a world shaped by time and the slow drip of mineral-rich water. The cave's formations have been sculpted into intriguing shapes, with some resembling a tortoise, vulture, giraffe, or even elephant ears. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 19 degrees Celsius, offering a cool respite from the Gozitan sun.During World War II, the Xerri family ingeniously expanded the cave, using it as a shelter from air raids. Today, the family continues to own and operate the grotto, with guided tours offering insights into the cave's history and geology.
