Public Transport

From the Xagħra bus stop, walk straight down the street towards the center of Xagħra. Continue for about 500 meters until you reach a junction. Turn left onto Triq il-Knisja. Follow this road for about 300 meters, and Xerri's Grotto will be on your right. Malta Public Transport operates buses on Gozo. A single journey ticket costs €2.00 in winter and €2.50 in summer.

In 1923, Anthony Xerri unearthed this subterranean wonder while digging a well. Instead of water, he found a cave adorned with stunning stalactites and stalagmites.Descend the narrow, 10-meter spiral staircase into a world shaped by time and the slow drip of mineral-rich water. The cave's formations have been sculpted into intriguing shapes, with some resembling a tortoise, vulture, giraffe, or even elephant ears. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 19 degrees Celsius, offering a cool respite from the Gozitan sun.During World War II, the Xerri family ingeniously expanded the cave, using it as a shelter from air raids. Today, the family continues to own and operate the grotto, with guided tours offering insights into the cave's history and geology. The tour guides highlight the various rock formations, sharing anecdotes and pointing out the unique features shaped over thousands of years.Note that the narrow spiral staircase may pose a challenge for visitors with limited mobility.
