Discover more about Xewkija Windmill

The Xewkija Windmill, known locally as 'Il-Mitħna tat-Tmien Kantunieri' (The Eight-Cornered Windmill), stands as a proud symbol of Gozo's heritage. Constructed in 1710 during the reign of Grand Master Raymundo Perellos, it is the oldest surviving windmill on the island. Unlike other mills of the era, it was built on flat land rather than a hill, showcasing a unique architectural approach. This octagonal structure was strategically designed to face the main winds, with each wall aligned to a cardinal direction. The windmill played a vital role in grinding wheat and other grains, serving the local community until 1886. Over the years, it also served as the first location of the Xewkija Band Club in 1956. After falling into disrepair, the windmill underwent extensive restoration, completed in 2021. The restoration included rebuilding the wooden mechanism, replacing the concrete roof with traditional stone slabs, and creating an outdoor space for folk activities. Today, visitors can explore the restored interior, learn about its history, and appreciate panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The Xewkija Windmill offers a captivating glimpse into Gozo's agricultural past and architectural ingenuity.
