Discover more about Foso e Interior Citadelle De Victoria

Rising dramatically above Victoria, the Citadella has been at the center of activity on Gozo since Neolithic times, with fortifications dating back to around 1500 BC. Developed by the Phoenicians and Romans, it became a complex acropolis. The Citadel served as a shelter for the population, especially during attacks by Turks and Berber corsairs. Until 1637, Gozo's entire population was required to spend the night within its walls. Inside the Citadella, visitors can explore narrow streets and historic buildings. The Cathedral of the Assumption, built between 1697 and 1711, stands on the site of an earlier temple to Juno. Museums within the Citadella, such as the Gozo Museum of Archaeology and the Gran Castello Historic House, showcase Gozo's heritage. The Citadella also offers stunning views of the island from its ramparts. The Citadella blends the old with the new, featuring cafes and shops selling local crafts. Throughout the year, it hosts cultural events, art exhibitions, and historical reenactments. The Citadella has been on Malta's tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1998.
