Discover more about Inland Sea Dive Site

The Inland Sea, or Il-Qawra in Maltese, is a remarkable geological formation and popular destination on Gozo's west coast. This lagoon of seawater is connected to the open Mediterranean Sea via a narrow 80-meter-long tunnel carved naturally through the cliffs of Dwejra Point. The tunnel was formed over time by the same wave erosion that created coastal arches, with seawater seeping through cracks, gradually weakening the rock. The depression containing the Inland Sea measures between 300m and 400m in diameter. Centuries ago, the Inland Sea provided shelter for fishermen, and today, it continues to serve as a haven for small fishing boats. Visitors can watch as the colorful luzzijiet (traditional Maltese fishing boats) are pulled up onto the stony beach. Boat tours are available, taking passengers through the tunnel to view the open sea, nearby caves, Fungus Rock, and the site of the former Azure Window. The Inland Sea is also a renowned diving site, with Jacques Cousteau reportedly listing it among his top ten dives. Divers explore the tunnel and the diverse marine life it shelters, including vibrant Cardinalfish and Bathing Sponges. Outside the tunnel, the seabed drops, creating shelves and reefs teeming with marine life.
