Discover more about Blue Hole

The Blue Hole is one of Gozo's most iconic natural attractions, drawing divers, snorkelers, and swimmers to its unique underwater landscape. Located in Dwejra, on Gozo's west coast, it's a natural sinkhole formed over centuries by the relentless action of wind and waves on the island's limestone bedrock. The Blue Hole itself is a circular rock formation, a sinkhole in the limestone, about ten metres wide and five metres across. The hole plunges to a depth of approximately 15 meters, offering a thrilling descent into a world of vibrant marine life and geological wonders. A submerged archway at around 9 meters deep connects the Blue Hole to the open sea, creating a stunning underwater window. Divers can explore caves, walls, and massive boulders, remnants of the Azure Window, which collapsed in 2017, adding a poignant touch of history to the site. The site is teeming with marine life, including colorful nudibranchs, sea anemones, and sea fans. Schools of fish, moray eels, and groupers are common sights, while lucky visitors might spot octopuses or even seahorses. Snorkelers can enjoy the shallow entry point and the dramatic underwater scenery, while divers can venture deeper to explore the caves and walls. The nearby Coral Gardens, a shallow rocky plateau, offers another excellent snorkeling opportunity with abundant sea life. While the walk to the Blue Hole over the coralline limestone can be challenging, steps have been carved into the rocks to ease the descent. The Blue Hole is best dived in the afternoon, especially when other dive sites are inaccessible due to weather conditions.
