Mosta Rotunda: Malta's Miraculous Dome

The Mosta Rotunda, or Mosta Dome, is a stunning architectural landmark and parish church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, located in the heart of Mosta, Malta. Built between 1833 and the 1860s, its neoclassical design, inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, makes it one of Malta's most iconic structures.The church's most striking feature is its massive unsupported dome, one of the largest in the world. The dome's interior soars to a height of 54.7 meters with a diameter of 39.6 meters, creating a breathtaking space adorned with paintings and sculptures. Visitors can climb to the inner balcony for panoramic views of the church's interior and the town of Mosta.The Rotunda's history is intertwined with a miraculous event during World War II. On April 9, 1942, a German bomb pierced the dome during Mass but failed to explode. This saved the lives of the 300 worshippers inside, and a replica of the bomb is now displayed in the sacristy as a testament to this event.Visitors can also explore the World War II shelters located just outside the church, offering a glimpse into Malta's wartime experience. These shelters feature photos and descriptions that detail Malta's role in the Second World War, along with personal items from those who sought refuge there.The church is open to visitors throughout the week, with varying hours on Sundays. An entrance fee of €5 grants access to the basilica, the WWII shelter, the inner balcony of the dome, and an audio guide available through a mobile app.
