Discover more about Mushroom Rock

Mushroom Rock, located west of Wied il-Mielaħ on the island of Gozo, is a natural rock formation that strikingly resembles a mushroom. Its shape is the result of continuous weathering, with the softer Globigerina limestone at the base eroding more quickly than the durable Coralline limestone cap. This iconic attraction draws visitors seeking to witness the power of nature and capture its beauty against the Mediterranean Sea.The surrounding area offers more than just the rock itself. The rugged coastline and clear waters invite leisurely walks and exploration. The secluded location provides a peaceful setting for picnics and enjoying the Gozitan landscape. While the nearby Azure Window, a natural arch, collapsed in 2017, the area retains its charm with other interesting rock formations.Historically, the area around Mushroom Rock, including Dwejra Bay, is known for Fungus Rock (Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral), a separate islet where a plant once believed to have medicinal properties grew. The Knights of St. John highly valued this plant, guarding it and even gifting it to distinguished visitors. Today, Fungus Rock is a nature reserve.
