Dominating the skyline of Victoria, Gozo, the Cathedral of the Assumption is a powerful symbol of the island's history and religious devotion. Located within the ancient Cittadella, the cathedral has been the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gozo since 1864. The site itself boasts a rich history, having been a prehistoric settlement, a Roman temple dedicated to Juno, and later a Byzantine church. The current cathedral, designed by Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafà, was constructed between 1697 and 1711 in the Baroque style. Its facade is inspired by the Church of the Gesù in Rome. The interior features a Latin cross ground plan and is adorned with pilasters. A notable feature is the trompe-l'œil painting on the ceiling, created in 1739, which gives the illusion of a dome. Visitors can explore the cathedral's interior, admire the religious artwork, and experience its peaceful atmosphere. The Cathedral Museum, housed in a small building behind the cathedral, displays religious artifacts and historical information. The annual feast of the Assumption, celebrated on August 15th, is a major event with marches, bands, and fireworks.
