Discover more about Ta' Kenuna Tower

Ta' Kenuna Tower, situated on the island of Gozo near Nadur, is a historical semaphore tower constructed in 1848 by the British military. It served as a crucial link in the communication network between Gozo and Malta, transmitting signals to ships and other posts. Perched atop a hill 130 meters above sea level, the tower commands a strategic vantage point with sweeping views of the island, the Mediterranean Sea, and the neighboring islands of Comino and Malta. The tower's name, Ta' Kenuna, is believed to originate from the word 'kenur,' referring to a place where fires were lit, possibly used for signaling enemy attacks in earlier times. The tower itself is a three-story structure, mirroring the design of similar towers in Għargħur and Għaxaq. A spiral staircase connects the floors and the roof, where the signaling equipment was once located. With the advent of the electrical telegraph, the semaphore system became obsolete, and Ta' Kenuna Tower ceased operations in 1883. Over time, the tower fell into disrepair until Maltacom p.l.c. (now GO) restored it in 2005. Today, it features a beacon to warn ships and communication antennas. Adjacent to the tower lies the Ta' Kenuna Botanical Garden, showcasing a variety of native and exotic plants. The gardens provide a tranquil setting for a leisurely stroll, complementing the historical significance of the tower.
