Discover more about Nadur Parish Church

Nadur Parish Church, formally known as the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, is a prominent landmark in Nadur, Gozo, Malta. The church's history dates back to April 28, 1688, when the parish was established. Initially, the spiritual needs of the parish were met by the Immaculate Conception church in Qala until a dedicated parish church could be constructed. The construction of the present church began on September 28, 1760, with the design attributed to Maltese architect Giuseppe Bonici. Construction concluded on May 12, 1867, marking the completion of a significant religious structure. The facade and aisles were designed by Francesco Saverio Sciortino and built in the beginning of the 20th century. The church was consecrated on May 12, 1867 and became Archipresbyteral 26 years later in 1893 and earned the title of Basilica on June 26, 1967. In 1907, a refurbishment program introduced aisles, a dome, and a facade, reflecting the Italian Renaissance style envisioned by Prof. F.S. Sciortino. Maltese artist Lazzaro Pisani created ceiling paintings depicting scenes from the lives of St. Peter and Paul, while Italian artist Pio Cellini contributed architectural decorations. Archpriest Martin Camilleri was the principal force behind these projects. Inside, visitors can admire the paintings on the dome and ceiling portraying the lives of Saints Peter and Paul, as well as the marble covering the church. The church also has statues representing various moments from the passion of Jesus. Nadur, the village where the church is located, gets its name from the Maltese word for 'to watch', as it's the highest point on Gozo and was used to watch for enemy attacks.
