Wied Musa Battery: A Coastal Fortress with a View

Wied Musa Battery, also known as Swatar Battery, is a former artillery battery located in Marfa, within the limits of Mellieħa, Malta. Constructed between 1714 and 1716 by the Order of Saint John, it formed part of a series of coastal fortifications around the Maltese Islands. These fortifications were designed to protect the island from potential maritime invasions.The battery originally featured a semi-circular gun platform with a parapet containing four embrasures for cannons. A rectangular blockhouse at the rear provided storage and operational space. In 1785, the battery was armed with four 8-pounder guns. Ammunition was stored in the nearby Saint Agatha's Tower.In the 19th century, the battery was transformed into the Marfa Palace Hotel, also known as Palazz l-Aħmar (Red Palace). This conversion involved significant modifications, including incorporating the blockhouse into the new hotel structure and demolishing the redan, a V-shaped projection that enhanced landward defenses. Despite these changes, the gun platform remained largely intact.Today, Wied Musa Battery stands as a testament to Malta's rich military history and architectural evolution. Although the structure is abandoned and in a dilapidated state, the gun platform is well-preserved, offering visitors a glimpse into the island's past.
