Discover more about City Gate

Valletta City Gate serves as a striking introduction to Malta's capital city, blending contemporary design with centuries of history. Designed by Renzo Piano and completed in 2014, the gate is the fifth iteration of Valletta's entrance, each reflecting different periods and styles. The original gate, Porta San Giorgio, was built in 1569 as a simple opening in the city's curtain walls. Over the centuries, it was rebuilt and renamed several times, including Porta Reale and Kingsgate, each time becoming more ornate and fortified. The current design is a minimalist statement, using Maltese limestone and steel to create a sense of power and austerity.Passing through the gate leads you onto Republic Street, Valletta's main thoroughfare, and provides access to landmarks such as the Parliament House, the Royal Opera House ruins, and Saint James Cavalier. The gate is more than just an entrance; it's a symbol of Valletta's ongoing evolution, bridging the past and present.
