Ta' Kenuna Tower, perched on a hill 130 meters above sea level in Nadur, Gozo, is a historical landmark with a rich past. Constructed in 1848 by the British military, it served as a crucial semaphore station, facilitating communication between Gozo and Malta. The tower was part of a network of visual signaling systems, relaying messages across distances before the advent of electrical communication. The tower's strategic location provided clear lines of sight to other stations, offering panoramic views of Gozo, Comino, and parts of Malta. The semaphore system became obsolete with the introduction of the electrical telegraph, leading to the tower's closure in 1883.In 2005, the Nadur Local Council, with the help of Maltacom (now GO), sponsored restoration works. While preserving the historic fabric, a beacon to warn ships and communication antennas were installed. The surrounding Ta' Kenuna Botanical Garden features a variety of native plants, adding to the site's appeal.Currently, Ta' Kenuna Tower and the gardens are closed to the public due to structural concerns caused by cliff erosion. Local authorities are assessing the situation to find a safe solution, but the closure is indefinite.
