The promontory it occupies was once known as Gallows' Point, named after the execution of slaves who attempted to escape.Throughout its history, Fort Ricasoli has been a key player in numerous conflicts. It faced French attacks in the late 18th century and served as a crucial defense point during World War II, enduring significant damage from aerial bombardments. In 1807, the fort was the site of a mutiny by the Froberg regiment, resulting in further destruction. Despite these events, the fort's gate was rebuilt in 1958, showcasing a slightly modified design.While not currently accessible to the public for casual visits, Fort Ricasoli has found a new life as a filming location. Its dramatic landscapes and historic architecture have made it a popular choice for filmmakers, with productions like 'Gladiator,' 'Troy,' and 'Game of Thrones' using the fort as a backdrop. Although the fort has suffered erosion over the years, plans were approved in 2019 to restore it, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
