Discover more about Mosta Rotunda

The Mosta Rotunda, officially known as the Rotunda of St. Marija Assunta, stands as a testament to Malta's rich cultural and religious heritage. This magnificent church, characterized by its grand dome, is one of the largest in Europe and is a prime example of neoclassical architecture. Built in the 19th century, this architectural gem was designed by the renowned Maltese architect George P. W. M. de Bruna and is a focal point in the town of Mosta. The church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and is celebrated for its stunning interior, adorned with beautiful frescoes and intricate woodwork that narrate biblical stories. Visitors to the Mosta Rotunda will be captivated by the sheer size and beauty of the dome which, at 37.2 meters, is a remarkable feat of engineering. The dome's construction was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, and it was completed without the use of scaffolding, a remarkable achievement for its time. A significant event in the church’s history occurred during World War II when a bomb fell through the dome but miraculously failed to explode, an incident that is commemorated within the church. In addition to its architectural splendor, the Rotunda is also a vibrant center of community life in Mosta. The surrounding square is often bustling with activity, with local markets and cafes offering visitors a taste of Maltese culture.
