Getting There

Walking

From the main bus station in Victoria, the Cittadella is a short, uphill walk. Head east from the bus station towards Republic Street, then turn right onto Fortunato Mizzi Street. Continue straight, following the signs for the Cittadella. The walk takes approximately 10 minutes, offering views of the surrounding town.
Public Transport

Several bus routes connect Mġarr Harbour (where the Gozo ferry arrives) to Victoria. Bus 301 is a direct option, departing every 30 minutes and taking you to Victoria's main bus station. From there, follow the walking directions to the Cittadella. A single bus fare costs approximately €2. A taxi from the Mġarr Harbour will cost about €10-€15.

The Cittadella Visitor Centre, located within the historic Cittadella in Victoria, Gozo, provides a comprehensive overview of the island's fascinating past. Situated in two old water reservoirs built in the 1870s, the center was created as part of the Cittadella Masterplan to offer essential interpretive facilities. The visitor center is divided into two main areas. The first features interactive touch screens and printed panels that explore the evolution of Cittadella, its natural environment, military and ecclesiastical history, and civil development. The second area is a surround theater that presents an eight-minute video showcasing key moments in Cittadella's millenia-long history. Information is available in eight languages.A single ticket grants access to the Cittadella Visitors' Centre, the Gozo Archaeology Museum, the Nature Museum, the Old Prisons, and the Gran Castello Historic House. The center itself is designed to be accessible, with features for visually and hearing-impaired visitors.The Cittadella, also known as the Castello, has been inhabited since the Bronze Age and served as an acropolis in Punic-Roman times. It has been a sanctuary, religious site, and defense system for Gozo's population. The fortress boasts impressive medieval architecture, with walls, towers, and a well-planned street layout.
