Getting There

  • Public Bus

    From downtown Frederick, head to the nearest bus stop serving the TransIT bus system. You can catch the Route 40 bus towards Hagerstown. Stay on the bus for approximately 30 minutes until you reach the stop at the intersection of Harpers Ferry Road and Route 340. From there, it's about a 15-minute walk to the Maryland Heights Trailhead. Walk east on Harpers Ferry Road until you see the Trailhead entrance on your left.

  • Bicycle

    If you're comfortable biking, you can rent a bike from one of the local bike rental shops in downtown Frederick. Head out of downtown towards Route 340, which will take you to Harpers Ferry Road. Follow Harpers Ferry Road for about 6 miles. Be cautious as this road can have traffic. The Maryland Heights Trailhead will be on your left as you approach Harpers Ferry.

    If you're up for a long walk, start at the Frederick Visitor Center and head southwest on East Patrick Street. Continue straight until you reach Route 340. Turn left onto Route 340 and follow it for about 3.5 miles until you reach Harpers Ferry Road. Note that this is a lengthy walk, so be prepared with water and comfortable walking shoes.
