Getting There

    If you are in downtown New Bedford, start at the New Bedford Whaling Museum located at 18 Johnny Cake Hill. Head east on Johnny Cake Hill until you reach Water Street. Turn right onto Water Street and walk along the waterfront. Continue on Water Street until you reach the intersection with Route 6 (also known as Purchase Street). Cross over to the opposite side of Purchase Street and continue walking straight. After a few blocks, you will reach Hawthorn Street. Turn left onto Hawthorn Street. The Buttonwood Park Zoo will be on your right at 425 Hawthorn St.

  • Public Transit

    From the New Bedford Transportation Center located at 134 Elm St, board the number 1 or number 6 bus. Both routes will take you along the main roads towards Buttonwood Park. Ride the bus until you reach the stop at Hawthorn Street. Once you get off, walk south on Hawthorn Street for a short distance, and you will find the Buttonwood Park Zoo at 425 Hawthorn St.

    For those who prefer biking, you can rent a bike from one of the local bike rental shops in downtown New Bedford. Start at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, and head east on Johnny Cake Hill, then take a right onto Water Street. Follow Water Street along the waterfront until you hit Purchase Street (Route 6). Turn left onto Purchase Street and then a quick right onto Hawthorn Street.
