Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving to Fort Independence, start by entering the address '2010 William J Day Blvd, Boston, MA 02127' into your GPS. Depending on your starting point in Suffolk County, you may take various highways. For example, from downtown Boston, take I-93 S and follow signs for South Boston. Exit onto East Broadway, then turn left onto William J Day Blvd. Look for the signs directing you to Castle Island, where Fort Independence is located. Parking is available nearby, but be aware that it may incur a fee during peak hours.

• Public Transportation - MBTA Bus

  To reach Fort Independence via public transportation, take the MBTA bus number 9 or 10 from South Station or any nearby bus stop. These buses run frequently and will take you directly to Castle Island. Make sure to get off at the stop nearest to Fort Independence. The fare for the MBTA bus is $1.70, which you can pay using a CharlieCard or CharlieTicket. Once you arrive, follow the signs to Fort Independence, which is a short walk from the bus stop.

• Public Transportation - Subway and Bus

  Alternatively, you can take the MBTA Red Line subway to Andrew Station. Once you exit the subway, transfer to the MBTA bus number 9 or 10. This route takes you to Castle Island as well. The total fare will be $2.40 ($2.40 for the subway and $1.70 for the bus) if you don't have a CharlieCard. After disembarking from the bus, follow the path leading towards the fort, which is well-marked.
