We don’t have the words to describe our experience with Jaya and Avi. We had told the hotel team how much we wanted an experience that would help us discover the real Mauritius, and they recommended Heritage House. Avi arranged transportation for us from the hotel and took us to the centre of the village and the local market. From there, the magic just kept growing. We explored the herb and vegetable garden, and the girls turned out to be natural-born spice grinders! They discovered what sugar cane and cassava look like, and learned about all kinds of spices. Then we began chopping vegetables we had never seen before, and even met Jaya’s mother, who has surely taught her many of the family’s kitchen secrets. Throughout the visit, Jaya and Avi shared their knowledge and patiently answered all our questions about Mauritian traditions, food and history. The whole experience felt warm and homely. And to top it all off, even our youngest—who usually has the most Western tastes—devoured the food! She was nearly as taken with the two adorable dogs she spotted behind the fence. We came hoping to learn about the traditions, and we found warm, welcoming people who felt like old friends.

Experience as a Local Visitor

Disappointing Experience for a Local Visitor I would like to share my personal experience as a local resident. When we arrived, we were warmly welcomed. We were a group of three girls, and at the beginning of our visit, there were also some tourists who arrived and were being guided around. We were supposed to receive the same guidance, but unfortunately, halfway through the visit, we found ourselves without a guide and had to explore everything on our own. What was quite disappointing was that the lady responsible for the visit was standing nearby and watching us struggle to figure out where and how we were supposed to take pictures, without offering any assistance. Fortunately, we were helped by a very kind and helpful gentleman, Ruttun, who made an effort to assist us and improve the experience. Regarding the food, the starters were fine, but unfortunately, the burgers were very disappointing. The service was also not up to expectations. Overall, I did not feel that the food and experience were good value for money. As a local visitor, I was hoping for a much better experience and more attentive service. I hope the management can take this feedback into consideration and improve the overall customer experience, particularly the guidance and service.

We really enjoyed our trip here. I’ll be honest, the history part of how sugar cane came to Mauritius & slavery has really left a lasting impression on me. Once we had a full walk around the full museum side, we went for the rum tasting & woah some were very strong! I really enjoyed the caramel one though. Great price to get in and with the audio guide on your own phone too. Great day out & would highly recommend to anyone.
