Lacandon Jungle: 2 days with Yaxchilan and Bonampak from Palenque
Well organised, memorable experience!
Very good experience overall. The tour was well organised and delivered everything promised in the itinerary. We shared parts of the tour with people on a one day tour and on a three day tour, booked from different agencies - so it seems whichever channel you book, the experience will end up being very similar. The two ruins on day one were both amazing. Yaxchilan had very little restoration - it is integrated with the jungle and feels very authentic. The murals at Bonampak were fascinating. The jungle walk on day two was about 1-1.5 hour one way and all flat. It's muddy, so good shoes are important. Bring also insect repellent. We had one hour to swim at the waterfall, which was definitely a highlight! Water was very clean and not cold. We didn't want to leave! The cabin was basic but all right. It has a private bathroom and even hot water for shower. There's electricity and a fan in the room. Tap water was on and off. We slept well listening to the running creek right outside of the window. We had three meals at the cabin. Food was good. Portion was not big enough for my teenager sons 😊. There was some confusion about whether and which meals were included in the package, but it was sorted out after the driver called the agency - this seems to be a recurring issue described also in other reviews. We were told that we will be picked up around 5pm the second day, but a driver came already after lunch, so we were back in palenque around 6pm. All in all it was two great days away from the crowd and close to the nature!

Yaxchilan and Bonampak Archaeological Zone
Wonderful experience
The visit to the archaeological areas of Yaxchilan and Bonampak is one of the culminating experiences in the Palenque region. Although it is theoretically possible to visit the sites on your own if you are carrying a vehicle, we thought it best to be accompanied by someone who knew the uses and customs of the towns and the dynamics of each area. We're not wrong. Our guide Marcelino strived to make the experience as enjoyable as possible.

Yaxchilan & Bonampak: Hidden Maya Ruins from Palenque
Not to be missed - a truly unique trip
The most amazing trip I did in 3 very busy weeks in Mexico. The very early start and hours of travel were absolutely worth it. The boat ride from Frontera Corazol to Yaxchilan along the Rio Usumacinta (which is the border between Mexico and Guatemala) was fabulous, and arriving at Yaxchilan, in the jungle, by boat as it cannot be reached by road, was incredibly special. It is a fabulous site, and the only sadness was that we could only have 2 hours there as we had such a lot of road (and water!) to cover. Then Bonampak - wow! A Mexican traveller in the group said he had heard it was like Michelangelo had been to Mexico - well, it was certainly as amazing, in my eyes at least. Unbelievable that we can see such well preserved wall painting in situ, right up close. The van was comfortable, and we ate an excellent breakfast and lunch en route. I can’t fault this unique trip. Worth every peso, and every hour of the long day.
