Discover more about Lake Thoreau Environmental Center

The Lake Thoreau Environmental Center is a nature center managed by the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), located a few miles west of the Hattiesburg campus. The center's mission is to inspire connections with the natural world and to promote the protection and stewardship of longleaf pine forests. The center comprises two main sections: the Eubanks Preserve and the Longleaf Preserve. The Eubanks Preserve, a 131-acre property, features hiking trails and an 11-acre artificial lake perfect for fishing. This preserve is named after Leon Mason Eubanks, a USM English instructor who constructed Lake Thoreau and donated the property to the USM Foundation in 2000. The Longleaf Preserve, spanning 160 acres, showcases a longleaf pine savannah with trees almost 100 years old and over 11 miles of biking and hiking trails known as the Golden Eagle Trail Complex. Visitors can enjoy various recreational activities, including hiking, birding, and wildlife viewing. The center also serves as a living museum, displaying the region's original forests before European settlement. Biodiversity surveys have identified over 350 vascular plant species, 44 reptile and amphibian species, and 105 resident and migratory bird species. The center is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays.
