The Jackie D. Sherrill Community Center stands as a vibrant hub in the heart of downtown Hattiesburg. Located at 220 W Front Street, this multi-purpose facility has a rich history, originally serving as a United Service Organization (USO) during the early 1940s. During World War II, it provided a welcoming space for military personnel stationed at nearby Camp Shelby. The building was equipped with rooms and showers in the basement, offering a 'home away from home' for white military personnel. In 1985, the building was renamed to honor Jackie Dole Sherrill, Hattiesburg's first female police officer, who tragically lost her life in the line of duty. Today, the center hosts a wide array of activities, including community meetings, conferences, wedding receptions, banquets, dinner theaters, proms, and various church and community functions. The Jackie D. Sherrill Community Center features a 5,000 sq. ft. auditorium with a fixed stage, a dining/meeting room (approximately 2,165 sq. ft.), two conference rooms, and a full-service kitchen with a serving room. Its central location places it within walking distance of City Hall, downtown restaurants, entertainment venues, and shopping opportunities, making it a convenient and accessible destination for locals and visitors alike.
