The Noland House, situated at 216 N Delaware Street in Independence, Missouri, holds a special place in the story of Harry S Truman. This historic home was owned by Truman's aunt and uncle, Joseph and Margaret Noland, and was frequently visited by Truman throughout his life. His cousins, Nellie and Ethel Noland, also lived there.The house is located directly across the street from the Truman Home. One notable event that occurred at the Noland House was in 1910, when Harry Truman returned a borrowed cake plate to Bess Wallace, who lived across the street, rekindling their friendship and sparking their courtship.The Noland House itself has undergone significant changes over the years. Constructed in three stages between 1858 and 1910, the house has seen extensive remodeling. In 1991, the National Park Service acquired the home and began a rehabilitation project. The first phase was completed in 2006 and included raising the structure, placing it on a new foundation, and installing new plumbing and electrical systems.Today, the Noland House serves as a museum and part of the Harry S Truman National Historic Site. Visitors can explore exhibits that showcase the courtship between Harry and Bess, as well as life in the Truman neighborhood during and after his presidency. The house also serves as a staging area for tours of the Truman Home.
