Located within Forest Park near the Union Avenue entrance, the Cabanne House offers a glimpse into St. Louis's history and architectural heritage. The current structure, completed in 1876, was designed by architect James H. McNamara in the Second Empire style. It replaced an earlier brick farmhouse built in 1819 by Jean Pierre Cabanne, for whom the house is named. The house features a distinctive mansard roof with hexagonal green tiles, 14-foot ceilings, tall arched windows, and decorative marble mantels. These details reflect the mid-Victorian architecture popular after the Civil War. For many years, the Cabanne House served as the residence for park superintendents and commissioners. In 1971, the Cabanne House was designated a St. Louis City Landmark, and in 1985, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It is noted as the only remaining 19th-century building in Forest Park. A renovation in 2006 by the Saint Louis Symphony Volunteer Association brought new life to the building. Today, the Cabanne House is available for catered events and private functions, offering a unique and historic setting for gatherings.
