Discover more about Tipova Monastery

Tipova Monastery, located about 95 km northeast of Chișinău, is a remarkable testament to Moldova's rich history and religious heritage. Carved into the rocky cliffs overlooking the Dniester River, this extensive cave monastery is one of the largest in Eastern Europe. The monastery's origins trace back to the 6th century BC, with monks establishing a community long before the formation of the Moldovan feudal state. Over the centuries, the complex expanded, with cells, churches, and passages hewn directly from the rock. The oldest section, the Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross, is believed to date back to the 11th century. Other notable sections include the Church of St. Nicholas and the Dormition of Our Lady cave complex, which houses an active church and a small museum. Tipova Monastery has played a significant role in Moldovan history, serving as a refuge and a defensive site against invaders. Legend has it that Stephen the Great, a prominent Moldovan ruler, married one of his wives here in the 15th century. Another legend claims that the mythological poet Orpheus spent his final years in this area and was buried near a waterfall. During the Soviet period, the monastery was closed and suffered damage. However, it was protected by the state in 1975, and religious services resumed in 1994. Today, visitors can explore the interconnected cave chambers, admire the ancient frescoes, and experience the serene atmosphere of this unique spiritual site. The surrounding Tipova nature reserve offers opportunities for hiking and enjoying the beautiful Moldovan landscape.
