Conacul lui Uvaliu: A Glimpse into Moldova's Past

Conacul lui Uvaliu, situated in the heart of Moldova, offers a unique window into the country's aristocratic past. Once a sprawling estate, today, only fragments remain of this once-grand complex, primarily a water tower that served the mansion. The site is located in Căzănești, approximately 75 kilometers from major cities, and whispers tales of a bygone era. The mansion was constructed in the second half of the 19th century by Ștefan Uvaliu, a local nobleman, and was considered one of the largest estates in the Russian Empire. While little is known about Uvaliu himself, his legacy lives on through the remnants of his palatial estate. The water tower, also referred to by locals as “Moșia boierului” (the boyar's estate) or “Palatul boierului” (the boyar's palace), stands as a testament to the estate's former glory.Over the years, the Conacul lui Uvaliu has been subject to various legends explaining its destruction. One account claims that in 1936, Uvaliu's heir sold the palace to Romanian engineers who dismantled it brick by brick. Another version suggests the palace was blown up after the war due to a shortage of bricks for post-war reconstruction, with a boarding school later built on the site. A third version claims the palace was bombed during the war, possibly due to a nearby Soviet airfield that was attacked by German aircraft.Today, the site presents a field with remnants of the foundation, marked by unusual, semi-circular red bricks. These remnants, along with the surviving water tower, evoke the image of a vast building with reportedly 99 rooms. Despite its ruined state, Conacul lui Uvaliu continues to attract visitors drawn to its historical significance and the picturesque landscapes of the Răut River valley.
