Discover more about The Triumphal Arch

The Triumphal Arch, designed by architect Luka Zaușchevici, is a neoclassical monument constructed from polished white stone. Standing at 13 meters, the arch features ceramic ornaments and Corinthian-style capitals. Its design is inspired by Roman triumphal arches and integrates with the architectural ensemble of the city center, aligning with the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Nativity of God and the Cathedral Bell Tower.Originally, the arch served as a bell tower, housing a massive 6.4-ton bell cast from captured Turkish cannons. The bell was intended for the Nativity Cathedral but was too large for the cathedral's belfry. A clock was installed on the arch in 1842, though it has been damaged and repaired several times throughout history. The arch has undergone several name changes, including Arch of Triumph, Arch of Victory (during Soviet times), and Holy Gates.Today, the Triumphal Arch is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, serving as a backdrop for national celebrations, military parades, and public events. It is free to visit, making it an accessible attraction for everyone. The surrounding area offers a range of dining and shopping options, catering to various budgets.
