Discover more about Stephen the Great Monument

The Stephen the Great Monument, a prominent landmark in Chișinău, stands as a powerful tribute to Stephen III of Moldavia, also known as Stephen the Great. This monument is not just a statue; it's a symbol of Moldovan identity, resilience, and historical pride. Designed by architect Alexandru Plămădeală, the monument was erected in 1928 near the main entrance of Stephen the Great Central Park. It replaced a monument to Alexander II of Russia, which was destroyed in 1918. The statue commemorates the 470th anniversary of Stephen's victory at the Battle of Vaslui. The bronze statue portrays Stephen the Great holding a sword in his right hand, symbolizing his role as a defender of the Moldavian principality against the Ottoman Empire. The statue itself is 5.20 meters tall and was cast in Bucharest. Interestingly, the bronze used for the statue came from cannons captured from the Ottomans during the Romanian War of Independence. The pedestal is made of Cosăuţi stone and is adorned with Moldovan coat of arms. The monument has a tumultuous history, mirroring Moldova's own struggles. In 1940, fearing Soviet occupation, it was moved to Vaslui, Romania, and its pedestal was destroyed. It was returned to Chișinău in 1942, only to be taken back to Romania in 1944. Finally, in 1989, it was restored to its original location, with the inscriptions restored. Today, the Stephen the Great Monument is a gathering place for public celebrations, commemorations, and flower-laying ceremonies during national holidays and official visits. It's a must-see for tourists, offering a glimpse into Moldova's past and a chance to connect with its cultural heritage.
