Old Orhei Fort, part of the Orhei National Park, is a captivating open-air museum that reveals layers of Moldovan history. Situated approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Chișinău, the complex lies along a narrow bend of the Răut River, where the natural landscape of limestone cliffs meets archaeological vestiges from various eras.The area has been inhabited since ancient times, with the Geto-Dacians constructing fortresses here between the 6th and 1st centuries BC. The Golden Horde conquered the territory in the 14th century, establishing a town called Shehr al-Jedid, complete with a fort and caravanserai. After the Horde's collapse, the Principality of Moldova emerged, and the town became known as Orhei. The Moldovans built a new fort and monastery, but the Crimean Tatars destroyed the town in the 16th century, leading to the establishment of New Orhei.Today, visitors can explore the remains of these civilizations, including the Gaetic fortress on the Butuceni promontory, the medieval fortress, and the cave monasteries. The cave monasteries, carved into the limestone cliffs, provided refuge for Orthodox monks and Christian rebels, known as Hadjuks, fleeing Ottoman rule. These caves contain historical artifacts and Old Church Slavonic inscriptions. The Orthodox monastery is still active, with monks maintaining the church at the top of the hill and the caves serving as chapels.The Old Orhei complex consists of several promontories, including Pestere, named for its many caves, and Butuceni, known for its geological features and unique scenery. The area is ideal for hiking, with marked trails that offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
