Discover more about Stephen the Great Monument

The Stephen the Great Monument is a prominent landmark in Chișinău, Moldova, honoring Stephen the Great (Ștefan cel Mare), a celebrated historical figure. As Prince of Moldavia from 1457 to 1504, he is remembered for his military prowess and efforts to preserve Moldavian autonomy. The monument, designed by architect Alexandru Plămădeală, was erected in 1928 near the main entrance of Stephen the Great Central Park. It replaced a monument to Alexander II of Russia, which was demolished in 1918. The statue was cast in Bucharest and cost 4,000,000 lei. The monument has had a tumultuous history, mirroring Moldova's own struggles. In 1940, fearing Soviet occupation, it was moved to Vaslui, Romania, and its pedestal was blown up. It returned to Chișinău in 1942, only to be taken back to Romania in 1944. In 1945, Soviet authorities ordered its restoration, and in 1989, it was finally returned to its original location. Today, the Stephen the Great Monument is a focal point for national holidays and official visits, with flower-laying ceremonies regularly held at its base. The surrounding park provides a tranquil escape from the city, with walking paths, sculptures, and monuments.
