Located in the heart of Chișinău, on the Piața Marii Adunări Naționale (The Great National Assembly Square), the Triumphal Arch serves as a significant historical and architectural monument. Erected in 1840 by architect Luca Zauschevici, the arch commemorates the Russian Empire's victory over the Ottoman Empire during the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–1829. The arch was initially intended to house a massive 6.4-ton bell, cast from captured Turkish cannons, for the Nativity Cathedral. However, the bell proved too large for the cathedral's belfry, leading to the construction of the arch as a fitting home. The Triumphal Arch, also known as the "Holy Gates" or "Arch of Victory", stands 13 meters tall and is constructed from white stone. Its design draws inspiration from Roman arches, featuring a square shape with four openings and Corinthian-style pillars. The upper level showcases classical decorations and once housed a mechanical clock, first installed in 1842. Over the years, the arch has undergone several restorations, with Soviet-era plaques added and later removed.Today, the Triumphal Arch is an integral part of Chișinău's central architectural ensemble, aligning with the Nativity Cathedral, its bell tower, the Great National Assembly Square, and the Government House. It remains a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, serving as a backdrop for national celebrations, military parades, and public events.
