Copou Park: Iași's Historic Green Heart

Copou Park, or Copou Gardens, holds the distinction of being the oldest public park in Iași and indeed, Romania. Its origins trace back to 1834, during the reign of Prince Mihail Sturdza, who initiated its development. Situated on Copou Hill, the park has evolved into a cherished landmark of Iași, blending history, culture, and natural beauty.The park's landscape is dominated by mature trees, primarily linden, ash, and maple, creating a green oasis within the city. These trees contribute significantly to the air quality and biodiversity of the area. The park also features a variety of shrubs, including forsythia, jasmine and lilac, adding seasonal color and fragrance.At the heart of Copou Park stands the Obelisk of Lions, a 13.5-meter-tall monument dedicated to Regulamentul Organic, the first law on political and administrative organization in the Romanian Principalities. Erected in 1834, the obelisk is one of the oldest monuments in Romania.Another notable landmark is Eminescu's Linden Tree, under which the famous Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu is said to have written some of his most celebrated works. The park also features the Mihai Eminescu Museum and the Junimea Alley, adorned with busts of prominent figures in Romanian culture.Copou Park is a popular destination for both tourists and locals, hosting poetry festivals, photography exhibitions, and arts and crafts fairs throughout the year. The National Ceramics Fair "Cucuteni," which brings together potters from all over Romania, is also held here.
