Discover more about Tipova Monastery

Tipova Monastery, located approximately 95 km northeast of Chisinau, is a remarkable testament to Moldova's rich history and religious traditions. Carved into the rocky cliffs overlooking the Dniester River, it stands as one of the largest cave monasteries in the region. The monastery's origins trace back to the 6th century BC when it was first established. Over the centuries, it has served as a sanctuary for monks and a place of refuge during times of invasion. The complex comprises several churches, chapels, and monastic cells, all hewn directly into the rock. The oldest chamber, the Elevation of the Holy Cross cave church, is believed to date back to the 11th century. Another significant section, the Dormition of Our Lady cave complex from the 15th century, features an active church and a small museum. Legend has it that Stefan cel Mare, a prominent Moldovan ruler, married one of his wives at Tipova Monastery in the 15th century. Another legend claims that the mythological poet Orpheus spent his final years in the area and was buried near a waterfall. During the Soviet era, the monastery faced closure and destruction. However, in 1975, the site gained state protection, and monastic life was revived in 1994. Today, visitors can explore the monastery's historical monuments, walk along scenic paths, and admire the breathtaking views of the Dniester River and the surrounding countryside.
