Discover more about Tipova Monastery

Tipova Monastery, located about 95 km northeast of Chișinău, is a remarkable testament to Moldova's ancient religious heritage. Carved into the rocky banks of the Dniester River, it stands as one of the largest cave monasteries in Eastern Europe. The complex is not only a spiritual site but also a historical landmark, offering breathtaking views and a unique architectural style. The monastery's origins are believed to date back to the 6th century BC, with some cells and chambers carved into the cliffs as early as the 10th to 12th centuries. Over the centuries, the monastery expanded, with a significant period of growth in the 18th century when it was divided into larger sections supported by massive columns. The site consists of three main religious chambers and monastic cells, all interconnected by precarious steps carved into the rock face. The oldest chamber, the Elevation of the Holy Cross cave church, is thought to date back to the 11th century. The Dormition of Our Lady cave complex, the newest chamber, dates back to the 15th century and houses an active church and a small museum. Throughout its history, Tipova Monastery has served not only as a place of worship but also as a refuge and defense against invaders. During the Soviet period, the monastery was closed and suffered destruction, but it was later protected by the state in 1975, and religious services resumed in 1994. Legend has it that Ștefan cel Mare, a great ruler of Moldova, married one of his wives at this monastery. Another legend claims that the mythological poet Orpheus spent his final years in the area and was buried near one of the waterfalls. Visitors to Tipova Monastery can explore the ancient buildings, admire the well-preserved frescoes, and take in the stunning views of the Dniester River and the surrounding landscape. The area also offers opportunities for hiking and exploring the natural beauty of the Tipova nature reserve, with its forests, waterfalls, and the Dniester River.
