Discover more about Curchi Monastery

Curchi Monastery, located in the Orhei district, is a serene escape into Moldova's spiritual heartland. Founded in 1773 by the brothers Iordache and Mihail Curchi, the monastery began as a modest wooden hermitage. Over time, it evolved into a significant architectural ensemble, blending Baroque and Neoclassical styles. The monastery's main church, the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God, is a highlight, boasting a design inspired by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the architect behind St. Andrew's Church in Kyiv. Its 57-meter dome is the highest in Moldova. The complex includes five churches, each with its own unique charm, as well as monastic cells, administrative buildings, and a bell tower.During the Soviet era, the monastery faced closure and was repurposed as a psychiatric hospital from 1961 to 2002. This period led to neglect and damage, but since the early 2000s, extensive restoration efforts have revived Curchi Monastery. Today, it stands as a symbol of resilience, drawing visitors with its tranquil atmosphere, historical significance, and architectural beauty. Visitors can explore the grounds, admire the frescoes and icons, and experience the peaceful ambiance of this important religious site.Legends shroud the monastery's origins, with some attributing its establishment to Stephen the Great. The most accepted version credits the Curchi brothers, who repented for their past by building the hermitage. Whether legend or fact, Curchi Monastery remains a testament to faith, architecture, and Moldovan history.
