Discover more about Soroca Fortress

Soroca Fortress, located in the city of Soroca on the banks of the Dniester River, is a remarkable example of medieval Moldovan defensive architecture. Originally constructed as a wooden fort in 1499 by Stephen the Great, it was rebuilt in stone between 1543 and 1546 during the reign of Petru Rareș. The fortress was part of a chain of fortifications along the Dniester, guarding Moldova's borders against invaders. The fortress boasts a circular design with a diameter of 37.5 meters and five equally spaced bastions. This unique design, incorporating the “golden section,” ensured no blind spots for defenders. Visitors can explore the interior, including a small military church above the entrance gate and a museum displaying historical artifacts.Throughout history, Soroca Fortress has been a strategic meeting point for military campaigns, including the Prut campaign of 1711 where Moldovan and Russian troops united against the Ottoman Empire. Legends tell of a white stork bringing grapes to the fortress defenders during a Tatar siege, symbolizing victory through faith. Today, the restored fortress welcomes tourists with modern facilities and offers panoramic views of the Dniester River and surrounding landscape.
