Discover more about Manuc Bey Castle

Manuc Bey Castle, officially the Historical-Architectural Complex Manuc Bey, is situated in the city of Hîncești, in the central-western part of Moldova. This architectural ensemble includes Manuc's Palace, the Steward's House, the Countess's Building, the Hunting Castle, and a watchtower. The castle's history began with Manuc-Emmanuel Mîrzoian, an Armenian merchant and diplomat who acquired the Hîncești estate in the early 19th century. Although Manuc Bey died shortly after purchasing the estate, his son Murat (Ivan) and nephew Grigore completed the construction of the stunning French-style castle between 1858 and 1861. The palace was designed in the spirit of French classicism, featuring large windows, loggias, and interiors adorned with frescoes. It is believed that the famous painter Ivan Aivazovsky painted the ceilings of some palace rooms. The complex also included a winter garden and a large park.Over the years, the estate served various purposes, including a mechanization school and a polytechnic secondary school during the Soviet era. The 1986 Vrancea earthquake caused significant damage to the palace, leading to its deterioration. In 1993, the mansion was granted the status of an architectural monument. Recent restoration efforts have revived the complex, making it a major tourist destination in Moldova. Visitors can explore the palace's opulent interiors, wander through the gardens, and discover the underground tunnels that once served as escape routes. The Hunting Castle hosts exhibits from the Museum of History and Ethnography, showcasing artifacts uncovered in the Hîncești district.
