Discover more about Tipova Monastery

Tipova Monastery, located about 100 km north of Chisinau, is a remarkable testament to Moldova's rich history and religious heritage. Carved into the rocky cliffs overlooking the Dniester River, it stands as one of the largest cave monasteries in Moldova and Eastern Europe. The monastery's origins trace back to the 6th century BC, with some cells believed to have been dug into the cliffs as early as the 10th-12th centuries. The complex consists of three main religious chambers and monastic cells, all connected by precarious steps carved into the rock face. The oldest chamber, the Elevation of the Holy Cross cave church, is thought to date back to the 11th century. Over the centuries, the monastery served not only as a place of worship but also as a refuge and defense against invaders. Legend has it that Stefan cel Mare, a great ruler of Moldova, married one of his wives here in the 15th century. Another legend claims that the mythological poet Orpheus spent his final years in this area and was buried near a waterfall. In 1776, the monastery underwent a significant expansion, with the addition of large sections separated by massive columns. However, during the Soviet period, the monastery was closed and suffered destruction. In 1975, the ruins were placed under state protection, and in 1994, religious services were resumed. Today, visitors can explore the cave complex, admire the views of the Dniester River, and walk through the Tipova nature reserve.
