Discover more about Old Orhei Fort

Old Orhei, a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status, is more than just a collection of ruins; it's a journey through time. Situated on a dramatic bend of the Răut River, the area's natural defenses have attracted settlers since the Paleolithic era. The complex showcases layers of history. The Geto-Dacians erected fortresses here in the 6th to 1st centuries BC, followed by the Golden Horde who established a town called Shehr al-Jedid in the 14th century. After the Horde's collapse, the Principality of Moldova emerged, and the area became known as Orhei. A new fort and monastery were constructed. The cave monastery, Peștera, is a highlight, with tunnels dating back to the 14th century. Orthodox monks sought refuge here, carving chapels and dwellings into the limestone cliffs. The complex also includes the ruins of medieval fortresses and the more recent Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos, built in 1905. Today, Old Orhei is an open-air museum, inviting visitors to explore its historical monuments and natural landscapes. The site offers hiking trails, birdwatching routes, and kayaking opportunities on the Răut River.
