Discover more about Tipova Monastery

Tipova Monastery, located about 95 km northeast of Chișinău, is a captivating destination that blends spirituality with stunning natural beauty. Perched on cliffs towering 200 meters above the Dniester River, this rock-cut monastic complex dates back to the 6th century BC, though it was abandoned for a long period and then reopened in 1756. It is considered one of the largest cave monasteries in Moldova and Eastern Europe. The monastery consists of three religious chambers and monastic cells connected by steps carved into the cliff face. The oldest chamber, the Elevation of the Holy Cross cave church, is believed to date back to the 11th century. The Dormition of Our Lady cave complex, the newest chamber dating back to the 15th century, houses an active church and a small museum. Visitors can explore the intricate cave structures, view ancient frescoes, and learn about the monastery's long history. Legend has it that Stephen the Great, a significant ruler of Moldova, married one of his wives at this monastery. Another legend claims that the mythological poet Orpheus spent his final years in the area and was buried near one of the waterfalls. The surrounding landscape features lush forests, dramatic cliffs, and the Tipova River, which forms several waterfalls as it flows into the Dniester. Visitors can explore the Tipova nature reserve, hike along the river, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. During the Soviet period, the monastery was closed and partially destroyed. However, it was protected by the state starting in 1975, and monastic life resumed in 1994. Today, the monastery is open to visitors daily, offering a unique blend of cultural heritage and natural landscapes.
