Discover more about Saharna Monastery

Saharna Monastery, officially the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, is a serene and historically rich monastic complex located near the village of Saharna, approximately 110 km north of Chișinău. Situated on the right bank of the Dniester River, the monastery is considered one of Moldova's largest centers for religious pilgrimages. The complex comprises two monasteries: the cave monastery of the Annunciation and the land-based Holy Trinity Monastery. The cave monastery, possibly dating back to the 14th century, features an altar carved into the rock and is surrounded by waterfalls. The Holy Trinity Monastery was founded in 1776 by the monk Bartholomew, who built a wooden church and cells enclosed by a stone wall. The wooden church was later replaced with a stone structure in the old Moldavian style, adorned with frescoes.According to legend, a monk saw a shining figure of Saint Maria on a rock, leaving a footprint considered a sign of divine purity. The monastery houses the relics of St. Cuvios Macarie, adding to its spiritual significance. Visitors can explore the monastery daily and enjoy panoramic views of the rocky hills, forests, and waterfalls. The Saharna River flows through the area, creating numerous cascades and thresholds. The surrounding landscape also contains an important archaeological site with vestiges from the Iron Age and a Geto-Dacian fortress.
