Car
If you are traveling by car, start from Red Lodge, MT. Head south on US-212 E for about 17 miles. Look for the signs directing you to the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness area. Turn onto Forest Road 142 (also known as Wild Bill Lake Road), which is a well-maintained gravel road. Follow this road for approximately 4 miles, and you will reach the parking area for Wild Bill Lake. There are no fees for parking in this area.
Public Transportation to Car Rental
If you are relying on public transportation, take a bus from Billings, MT to Red Lodge. From the Red Lodge bus station, you can rent a car from a local rental agency. Once you have your rental car, follow the same directions as above: head south on US-212 E, then take Forest Road 142 to reach Wild Bill Lake.
Hiking
For those already in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness and looking to hike to Wild Bill Lake, locate the nearest trailhead that leads to the lake. The trail is well-marked and typically begins at the parking area off Forest Road 142. The hike is approximately 1.5 miles of moderate terrain, and it should take about 30-45 minutes. Make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks for the journey.
