Car
If you are driving along the Beartooth Highway (US Route 212), head towards the town of Cooke City, Montana. From there, take the NF-142 road towards Clay Butte Lookout. The road can be rough, so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Continue on NF-142 for approximately 7 miles until you reach the lookout. Be sure to follow any posted signs, as the roads can be narrow.

Public Transportation & Hiking
If you are using public transportation, take a bus or shuttle service to the nearest town, which is Cooke City. From Cooke City, you will need to arrange for a taxi or a ride-share service to take you to the entrance of NF-142. Once you reach NF-142, the lookout is about 7 miles up the road, but due to the road's rough conditions, a hike may be necessary to cover the last stretch. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking gear and carry plenty of water.
