Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving from Kalispell, head northwest on US-93 N for approximately 28 miles. Merge onto I-90 W towards Missoula and continue for about 32 miles. Take exit 33 for MT-83 N towards Seeley Lake and drive for about 15 miles. Merge onto US-2 W and continue for approximately 40 miles until you reach the small town of Essex. From Essex, follow the signs to the Silver Staircase Waterfall trailhead, which is accessible via a gravel road. Be aware that parking might be limited, so plan to arrive early.

• Public Transportation

  If you are using public transportation, take a Greyhound or similar bus service to the town of Essex. Once you arrive in Essex, you will need to either walk or find a local taxi service (which may need to be booked in advance) to reach the trailhead for Silver Staircase Waterfall. Since public transport options may be limited, it is advisable to check the schedule ahead of time and plan your return trip accordingly.

• Hiking

  Once you arrive at the trailhead for Silver Staircase Waterfall, be prepared for a hiking trail that may be rugged in parts. The hike to the waterfall is approximately 1.5 miles round trip. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as there are no facilities along the way. The trail is well-marked, but it is advisable to have a map or a smartphone with GPS capabilities, as cell service may be limited in this remote area.
