Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you are in Merzouga, you can easily reach the Sahara Desert by car. Start from the center of Merzouga and head southeast on the main road, which leads directly into the desert. Follow the signs to Erg Chebbi, a famous dune area. The drive is approximately 10 minutes from the center of town. Make sure to have enough fuel, as there are limited services available once you enter the desert.
Public Transportation
To reach the Sahara Desert from nearby cities like Errachidia or Rissani, take a bus to Merzouga. Buses run regularly, and the trip takes about 3-4 hours. Once you arrive in Merzouga, you can either walk or take a short taxi ride to the desert entrance. The taxi fare is typically around 50 MAD (Moroccan Dirhams).
Camel Trekking
For a unique experience, consider booking a camel trek from Merzouga into the Sahara Desert. Many local tour operators offer guided camel rides that can last from a few hours to several days. Prices can vary, but expect to pay around 300-600 MAD per person for a half-day trek, which typically includes a guide and refreshments. Make sure to wear comfortable clothing and bring plenty of water.
4x4 Tours
If you prefer a faster way to explore the desert, consider joining a 4x4 tour. These tours usually start from Merzouga and can take you deeper into the Sahara. Prices for a half-day 4x4 tour typically range from 500-800 MAD per person. It's advisable to book in advance, especially during the tourist season.
