From Rural Fringe to Railway Suburb

Before Yangon expanded northwards, the Insein area was largely peripheral to the main urban core, with villages, cultivated land and routes linking settlements around the city. British colonial development gradually changed its position as roads, railway infrastructure and administrative institutions extended beyond central Rangoon. The railway helped turn Insein into a practical suburban centre, connecting workers and residents with industrial and commercial districts elsewhere in the city. During the colonial period and the decades that followed, Insein developed as a district of workshops, transport-related employment, public institutions and expanding housing.
