Getting There
Public Transportation
To begin your journey to Everest Base Camp (EBC), you can take a bus from Kathmandu to Jiri. The bus station is located in the Ratna Park area of Kathmandu. The journey to Jiri takes approximately 8-10 hours and costs around NPR 800-1200. Once you arrive in Jiri, you will need to hire a local guide or join a trekking group to start your trek to EBC.
Trekking
From Jiri, you will trek for about 6-7 days to reach Lukla. The trekking route will take you through beautiful villages and stunning landscapes. From Lukla, you will continue your trek to EBC, which will take an additional 7-8 days, depending on your pace and acclimatization. Ensure you have a good map or a guide with you during the trek.
Flight
Alternatively, after reaching Jiri, you might consider taking a flight from Jiri to Lukla, which will save you several days of trekking. The flight takes about 30 minutes and costs around NPR 5000-7000. However, flights are subject to weather conditions, so be prepared for possible delays.
Local Transport
Once you reach Lukla, you will start the EBC trek. Local transport options such as porters are available if you wish to carry less gear. Hiring a porter typically costs around NPR 2000-3000 per day, plus food and accommodation.
Acclimatization
During your trek, ensure you take acclimatization days in places like Namche Bazaar and Dingboche to adjust to the altitude and reduce the risk of altitude sickness. This is crucial for a successful ascent to EBC.
Return Trip
For your return journey, you can either retrace your steps back to Jiri or take a flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu, which is quicker and more convenient. Make sure to book your flight in advance, as they can fill up quickly, especially during peak trekking seasons.
