Getting There

  • Car

    If you're traveling by car from Kathmandu, take the Araniko Highway towards the north and follow signs for Jiri. This route is approximately 185 km and takes around 8-10 hours depending on traffic. Once you reach Jiri, continue towards the town of Salleri. From Salleri, you can either hike to Everest Base Camp or take a local jeep to Lukla, which is the gateway to the Everest region. Be aware that the roads can be rough, and a 4WD vehicle is recommended.

  • Public Transportation

    To reach Everest Base Camp using public transportation, take a tourist bus from Kathmandu to Jiri. The bus ride typically lasts around 8-10 hours. Once in Jiri, you can hire a local jeep to take you to Salleri, where you can either trek to Everest Base Camp or take another jeep to Lukla. The jeep ride from Jiri to Salleri takes about 1-2 hours. From Lukla, you will need to trek for several days to reach Everest Base Camp, which is approximately 38 km away.

    If you prefer a quicker option, you can book a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Flights typically take about 30-40 minutes. Once you arrive in Lukla, you will start your trek to Everest Base Camp. The trek from Lukla to Everest Base Camp takes around 8-12 days, depending on your pace and the route you choose. Be sure to check flight availability in advance, as flights can be affected by weather conditions.

  • Trekking

    Once you have reached Lukla, the trek to Everest Base Camp begins. Follow the trail through the picturesque villages of Phakding and Namche Bazaar. Be prepared for altitude acclimatization days, especially in Namche Bazaar. The trek involves several days of hiking, with overnight stays in guesthouses along the way.
