Rara Lake, the largest lake in Nepal, formed due to tectonic activity in the Himalayas. The lake, situated at an altitude of approximately 2,990 meters, was created when geological movements caused the land to shift and create a natural basin that was eventually filled by glacial meltwater and rainfall.

In 1976, the Nepalese government officially established Rara National Park, recognizing the ecological and cultural significance of the area. The park, which encompasses Rara Lake and its surrounding forests and meadows, was created to protect the unique biodiversity and rich cultural heritage of the region. This marked a significant step in the conservation of Rara Lake and its environment.

With the establishment of Rara National Park, the region began to attract tourists from around the world. The lake's pristine beauty, combined with its remote location, made it a popular destination for trekkers, nature enthusiasts, and cultural explorers. The local communities have adapted to the influx of visitors by developing eco-friendly tourism practices that preserve the natural and cultural integrity of the area.

Rara Lake holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the local communities. Rara Lake is located in the Mugu District of Nepal. The nearest major city with an airport is Nepalgunj. From Kathmandu, you can take a domestic flight to Nepalgunj, which takes about an hour. From Nepalgunj, you will need to take another flight to Talcha Airport, which is the closest airport to Rara Lake and is about a 30-minute flight. From Talcha, it is a 2-3 hour trek to Rara Lake. Alternatively, you can also take a bus or jeep from Kathmandu to Jumla or Surkhet, and then trek to Rara Lake, which can take several days.

Within the Rara Lake region, transportation options are limited due to its remote location. The primary mode of transportation is trekking. Local porters and mules can be hired to carry your luggage. In some areas, you may find jeeps available for hire, but these are not always reliable. It is essential to plan your transportation in advance and be prepared for long treks.

The official currency in Nepal is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). Credit cards are rarely accepted in the Rara Lake area, so it is crucial to carry sufficient cash.
