History of Rara Lake

A High Himalayan Lake

Rara Lake is a natural freshwater lake formed within the mountain landscape of north-western Nepal. Its basin, high elevation and forested surroundings reflect the geological and climatic forces that shaped the Himalayan region over long geological timescales. The lake became the defining geographical feature of the surrounding Mugu landscape, while the difficult terrain limited large-scale settlement and industry. Local communities developed livelihoods suited to the high valleys and mountain slopes, including agriculture, livestock keeping and trade along regional routes.

Traditional Life in Mugu

Before modern tourism reached the area, Rara was primarily part of the lived landscape of Mugu rather than a commercial destination. Villages and seasonal activity were connected to difficult foot routes across the Karnali highlands, and people relied on local farming, grazing, forest resources and regional exchange. Gamgadhi developed as the district headquarters and remains an important administrative and trading centre. The remoteness of the region helped preserve a comparatively quiet lakeside environment, although it also limited access to services and transport.

Rara National Park, 1976

Rara National Park was established in 1976 to protect the lake, its catchment and surrounding forests. Covering about 106 square kilometres, it is Nepal’s smallest national park by area and one of its most distinctive, centred on a major high-altitude lake rather than a broad lowland habitat. Protection brought greater attention to forest conservation, wildlife management and the ecological importance of the shoreline. It also established the framework within which later visitors experience the lake, with access and activity shaped by the protected status of the landscape.

International Wetland Recognition
